Frank D. Kern joined Pennsylvania State College in 1913 as a professor of botany. In 1922, when Penn State established a graduate school, Kern was named dean. Trustees of the university named the Kern Graduate Building for him in 1971 recognizing his 37 years of service as professor and head of the Department of Botany prior to his retirement with emeritus rank in 1950.
